I think the fact that suicide is such a hard issue not just for religious communities but society in general doesn't speak to the failing of religion necessarily, but more to the emotional, economic, and social devastation that suicide brings and our evolving understanding of mental health.

If we look at our understanding of and the treatment of mental health in general, we've made leaps and bounds of progress in the last 100 years. So much so that we can easily look back at some early 20th century practices as naive and/or barbaric. I think the fact that religious institutions are evolving in their approach to the subject is reflective that society as a whole is evolving in its approach to the subject.
