Damn. I'm late to the party. I have something really interesting to share. Jenny McMahon describes art as units of social calibration. Which is a pretty tersely straightforward way of describing it. But essentially, the power in art it for it to calibrate its audience. I'm not as good at explaining it as she is, so check out this audio interview. That function in itself is a subjective one.
