I'm very impressed with McConaughey. His performance had me rooting for him. Every time I see a living example of racism or homophobia I think about what it would take people to come to the view that we humans are more alike than different and that we shouldn't persecute one another for our differences. Well, in McConaughey's Ron Woodroof, it takes his entire life and worldview being upended by a diagnosis of a highly stigmatized disease for his "position to evolve" as Obama would say. I think the film is also an excellent portrayal of a narrow part of the 80s, that coming from someone who never lived through it.
