But my demand for Facebook is about as inelastic as it gets. I'm a member of, you know, six or so organizations (some paid, which matters exponentially more) that essentially require me to use Facebook to function. Now, my pageviews may go down due to their negative changes. Maybe -- but personally I haven't noticed any rise or decline in use in years. Though I may also not be the typical user.

So they can price-gouge (to use your analogy) in the short-term and in the long-term I'll still be on Facebook.

Really - that's Facebook's business model. Con Edison. Time Warner. Puget Sound Energy. A monopoly service with no options, no customer-facing wing, and exactly one product. What they don't seem to understand is that stringing cable is a lot more expensive than porting a friends list.

To what? I'll believe it when I see it. You can name Twitter and every other alternative until my ears bleed but none of them do everything I can do on Facebook, it's not even close, and the incumbent tends to have an advantage anyway.

Basically, if I hate Facebook now and still use it, no matter what they do I'll still tolerate it in order to network and schedule. And some other things.
