If you let your parents control every aspect of your life when you are in middle school and high school, they will expect to continue to control it when you move out. As the article points out, this behavior doesn't magically begin at the college level, so addressing it at the college level is only dealing with part of the problem. That said, I know many kids -- and yeah, if you act like this you're still a kid no matter how old you are -- that forget or never grasp that their parents are paying huge sums for them to go to college at all. They forget that maybe they owe their parents, at the very least, visits at holidays and, yes, the occasional communication. So there is fault on both sides.
