Lots of talk of scientology on hubski of late, mostly regarding Tom Cruise... and some Beck Hanson.
Cruise hasn't made the best films, though I definitely played "Tom Gun" as a kid with my cousins, it isn't an Oscar worthy performance. His role as Frank T.J Mackey was though. This clip that I've posted is a good example of his performance. In this scene Frank is falling apart and you can see the cracks forming in his veneer. It's a solid acting performance imo.
mk recently pointed out that this could be because he is "unconsciously channeling some scientology". -I think there could be some truth to that.
It's a great film, it's a great scene and I think it proves that there could be some acting depth to Cruise. Can anyone think of any other Tom Cruise performances that are worth mentioning?
I think his performance in Born on the Fourth of July is damn good.
it made me cringe. (of course this is taste not morality or intelligence.)
I haven't seen that film since it first came out. I should probably revisit, I recall that he got a lot of accolades for the role. I remember being excited to see the movie Vanilla Sky, only to be very disappointed. -More by a flawed film than cruises acting though.
Have you seen the spanish movie that it is a scene for scene remake of?
Abre Los Ojos<-- it is quite good. There is another guy, Cameron Crowe, that has a lot of acclaim without any achievement.
Is he a scientologist too? Another Guy J.J. Abrams nothing but hype and disappointment.
You see this? You might want to sit down first.
Didn't see Cameron Crow on the list but there were certainly some surprises. Jeffrey Tambor? Say it aint so!
It ain't so he just took classes. http://www.la.com/portlet/article/html/fragments/print_artic... ^^^^^^^^^ good enough to be cited by wikipedia so good enough for me :)
Ha. thanks. I really like him as an actor. Unappreciated imo.
I've not seen Abre Los Ojos, thanks for the recommendation. I'm not a big J.J. Abrams fan, but I also don't think he sucks. He's just sort of "meh". That said, I never watched Lost or Alias. I enjoyed his Star Trek movie but it's not "amazing" or anything. I would say he's a solid director, not a great one but probably reliable in the eyes of the Hollywood power brokers. Super 8 was entertaining.
