This reminds me a lot of a of an idea that Venkatesh Rao wrote about a year or so ago, an idea he calls the "manufactured normalcy field". His hypothesis (I think) is that technology only becomes main stream when it isn't disruptive. That is, that no one will ride an airplane until it's not different from riding in a car, and no one will ride in a car until it's qualitatively similar to riding in a carriage, etc. I think the quote above, is a bit simpler way of putting this.
