No idea why this took as long as it did to figure out. It's expensive to do, loses a major competitive advantage in pricing of parts and dumps years of branding. Shouldn't have left the boardroom in the first place.
But they could concentrate more on the magic fairy juice. Seriously, what software and services do HP provide? I've never heard of them.
Services and software are going to take a beating in the next decade, IMO. There's just so much energy gunning for premium services, and interaction is getting flattened. I think it will pay to be someone that builds something.

They've been trying to follow in IBM's footsteps for the longest time now. One of the reasons why they brought Leo A. on to transform them to a service oriented enterprise.
