Speaking of history repeating itself, do you think there is a better comparison with Iran than Eastern Europe vis. Egypt? Numerous factions all wanting the overthrow of an old, ruthless regime, the one who is the most ruthless themselves will come out on top. In Eastern Europe people mostly wanted economic freedom, which they thought they could achieve through democracy and free expression. In Egypt, a large bloc of protesters certainly wanted this, bu the well organized factions clearly do not. Seems much more Iranian in the way things are playing out.
