I feel this parallels with things like disease research; there's a shitload of money available for anyone that can insert the word "cancer" into their disease research, but very little for someone researching Bell's Palsy, or other less-well-known diseases.

The business drives which research pays the best. And academics need to buy Ramen noodles, too, so they go where the funding is. Chicken or egg?
