Yeah yeah yeah ... Gizmodo story, so whatever ... but the non-editorial content is still valid. Twitter put together an actual team of effective and leading-edge researchers on machine learning and bias, who were working to make Twitter's algorithm better.
Ok, so that's a stupid goal. Twitter is shit. Always will be shit. It's the nature/design of the product.
The GOOD PART is that this was an extremely tight, effective team, of world-leading researchers... who have now been cut loose from Twitter, and can be picked up by someone with a viable product. (I hope Google or Apple.)
They were doing important work for an unimportant project. Untethered from that, I suspect this team will be snapped up wholesale, and their work expanded to a much wider audience.
Which we need, right now, in the ML world of algorithms and bias. The tech industry was finally moving in the right direction with the establishment of this team... and now the team is free to work outside the confines of a shit product.
