What's depressing about China is the market-oriented reforms didn't usher in an era of political freedom. Especially with Xi and the camps, it appears the overall tendency is moving back toward a 1984-esque nightmare.
I just looked up the biography of Xi Jinping by chance and discovered this.
Worker-Peasant-Soldier students were Chinese students who enrolled in colleges between 1970 and 1976, during the later part of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). They were accepted not for their academic qualifications, but rather for the "class background" of their parents.
