More accurately, he freaked out about the logistical nightmare of mobilizing troops and armor from one coast to the other and, having done it as a truck driver in 1919, knew that 59 freaking days was far too long of a mobilization time should a border need to be defended.

Isn't there some kind of regulation saying that at an interval of every x miles of interstate there needs to be a straight stretch for the launching and landing of aircraft?

Edit: Wikipedia says that's an urban legend. I refuse to disbelieve.

Total Urban Legend. Jets land on thicker concrete pads than roads. You COULD land jets on highways, but at that point the nukes are in the air and landing fighter jets is of the least concern.
