Almost every part of your culture is due to some form of past appropriation. That's what happens when cultures mix, they influence each other, they try (and often fail) to learn from each other, and to modify their own cultures in ways they see as beneficial. It's impossible not to appropriate when two cultures meet.

Appropriation with disparate power dynamics can make some appropriation tasteless. But it doesn't mean that all appropriation by those with power isn't sincere. Hell, it can be an avenue by which to disrupt the disparities.

My wife was born in China. She has appropriated much of my culture. I have appropriated some of hers. None of this is in bad taste, IMO.

At any rate, I do not like when people are proud of things that they have not done. There's a difference between appreciating a culture, including your own, and taking pride in it.
