Uhm... badges on Hubski predate Reddit Gold by about nine months. I have a lot of them.

I think giving someone a badge that you either earned through many posts, were awarded at one point or bought all have the same effect of saying "this is quality content."

It matters more from site participants that had to earn it, though. Reddit Gold just says "your comment was worth $4 to me."

I say this having been given four YEARS of gold in one fell swoop.

But saying "Your comment was worth $4 to me" is just a means to the end of saying "This comment was worth something to me." We could keep the method of acquiring these badges anonymous so no one knows if you paid for them to give or earned them beforehand.

Great points, but I don't see why a reddit gold equivalent can't be used in conjunction with donations instead of the sole means of income like on reddit (ads, that are mostly blocked, aside)
