But there's something about this situation that I find pretty fascinating, even though it's speculative and only partially related to music.

How depressing. Why can't people listen to and play music just because they like it and not give a fuck about the rest?

I agree with you but at the same time, this sentence rung true for me: The only thing I knew was that the words "Tune Yards" were spelled "tUnE-yArDs," which seemed like reason enough to ignore it (not a good reason, but a reason nonetheless). Not even sure why but the spelling kind of smacks of marketing to me and I think I would have avoided it too.

I get that. Who knows why she has such a tErRiblE nAMe. Maybe there's a post rationalized story to cover up the fact that it was some weird auto correct :) Had I not accidentally listened to her once, I would've made the same decision for that reason too. But ultimately that has nothing to do with the music and it's kind of a shame really.

I've known of and have casually listened to Merrill Garbus for a couple of years now. Most of her music has a vertigo inducing asperity to it (maybe that's where the name comes into play), but I like it because it's different. And when she's on, she's really on. Powerful voice, interesting timing, layered sounds. But to say that her career is just starting now because he heard that she won an award that she could probably give a shit about is presumptuous to me.

Mostly though, I resent that CK opens by saying that this discussion won't consider or include many people: "I'm guessing this doesn't mean much to more than (maybe) 10,000 people in the entire country."

but then ends with

"For the next 15 years, she must validate other people's belief in her own brilliance. There is no other option. Because if she doesn't, those same people will view her inability to become transcendent as hilarious."

I mean, what the fuck? Maybe some people aren't in the music game solely to get famous and forever be adored by their fans.

Maybe I should add this great moment to top things off:

http://youtu.be/AHEYs0CMe4U

"I don't know what this means, I don't think it means anything. ... There's too many bands and you heard this all before. ... Thanks I guess."

I was gonna say, reminds me of the part in Eternal Sunshine when Clementine says "I'm not a concept Joel. Too many guys think I'm a concept or I complete them or I'm going to make them alive, but I'm just a fucked up girl who is looking for my own peace of mind. Don't assign me yours." Great line.

Good call...a movie I should revisit.
