IMO Joyce Carol Oates is correct when it comes to most of the students. Also, university is where education evolves from preparation to opportunity. Grades in university aren't critically important, and could just as easily be: fail, pass, excel.

I took two classes through the Harvard Extension School that were open to Harvard students, Chemistry and Neurobiology. They weren't appreciably different than the classes I took at my Midwestern alma mater, Oakland University. Less students were slackers at Harvard, however (although I was one of them).
