I don't know what I was expecting, but to start with The New Yorker is kind of cheap. It certainly has a lot of cachet with people who aren't all that interested in literature. As one person (I forget who at the moment) put it, "once you've published a poem in The New Yorker, you've "made" it as far as poetry goes" meaning that even if you're at the top of your game, it's very unlikely that people not actively seeking quality poetry will have heard of any of the publications you've been in, or heard of your book(s)/chapbooks(s) if you've published/issued any.
