Within the space of 30 seconds he is shown gripping a weapon threateningly when confronting an unarmed mob and then walking calmly with his hands up as soon as the cops show up. More importantly, by the time he opened fire on the people who had him on the ground he had already shot at protesters. You don't get to say "I was defending myself" if you're selectively defending yourself against reprisal for your own deadly acts.
