Jackson Pollock. Every time I see his work I immediately recognise it and my first thought is always "I could so make one of those".

That's exactly what I thought before I studied him. After, I'm in awe at his process. At the time, it was absolutely groundbreaking, and the influences he had were pretty stunning. A lot of Jungian thinking went into his work.

Best take I've heard on modern art from the NC Museum of Art:

"I could have done that! Yea but you didn't"

Oh yea he 'discovered' his approach and made it famous. I don't mean to say that he didn't deserve his success, I just think that on a skill level I look at Manet for example and I know I could never produce something like it.

Most of the early modernist and people like pollock were trained to paint in a realist style, but whats the point? Artistically there really isn't anything new to discover by painting another Manet.
