That's to the high end at the larger tech companies, and unusual anywhere else. Glassdoor puts the median for programmers and synonyms somewhere between $70,000-$80,000. Good money, but not that much more than any other white collar job, and less than most established professions.

True.

I know of some contractors working in Backbone that can make huge sums from 3-6 month contracts but those are few and far between.

Oh, yeah, plenty of contractors make around $100/hr, which could make them around $200,000 if they worked 40 (billable) hour weeks all year. I've never met a contractor who could line up 40 billable hours every week though.
