College sports played on this level are so distinctly American. Wikipedia's article seems to give a reasonable overview - essentially, except for Mexico's university-affiliated association football (soccer) teams (which may be more like, say, Romania's teams in that they're more kinda sponsored by the university, I think, and not necessarily the university's team), university-level athletics seem to be run at the level of club sports or lesser-publicized intercollegiate sports like softball and cross country. The US appears to be the lone entity that's made it into a gigantic industry.
