Devonte Hynes is a musician I have just recently discovered, in the last week or so. If you get a second, check out his song "Your Not Good Enough". NPR just did a short piece on him, where he had this really interesting quote about how the public views an artists decision to change up their approach and sound.
"You know, it's funny because I think, as a general rule, that people seem to think that if you do lots of different things over the course of, like, a timeline, it means that you kind of disregard what you did before. But that's not true of me. I still genuinely like everything I did as much as I liked it when I released it."
I used to be a big fan of Lightspeed Champion's first album a couple years ago, and subsequently got into Test Icicles and the first Blood Orange album when it came out. Well I liked it but didn't listen to it too much. Kinda forgot about him until I heard Chamakay and You're Not Good Enough. Both are fantastic songs and Cupid Deluxe is probably my new favorite work by him. Glad to see he finally caught his stride, both critically and commercially.
