Today I made NotPhil's Microwave Sugar-Glazed Bacon, which gq and I had for breakfast.
I had to improvised a bit. I bought some nice applewood-smoked bacon the other day, but I found out that we didn't have brown sugar, and no dry mustard. Instead, I substituted honey for the brown sugar, and a 1/2 teaspoon of Dijon mustard. The vinegar, honey, and mustard formed a really nice glaze anyway after 20 seconds in the microwave.
We don't have a microwave bacon rack, so I took NotPhil's advice, and used chopsticks on a plate. That worked fine. The chopsticks actually pull together as the bacon shrinks.
Here are the ingredients:
Ready for the first heating:
Halfway there, before I flipped and basted the other side:
And there we have it:
The glaze caramelized a bit, and it tasted delicious. I made another batch after this one.
Our microwave is really cheap. However, it did a pretty good job. I think if I played with the power settings, I might get it to cook a bit more evenly. However, it wasn't overly cooked, and had a consistency that we like, -just before the whole of the bacon gets crispy.
Thanks, NotPhil!
I'm glad it worked out.
Yep, knowing the wattage of your oven and the wattage of its different power settings really is the key to using a microwave.
