Since when has Medium required a sign-in? Especially when Mother Jones has it on their site? Also, this is a stupid article. Sodium polyacrilate is a white, biodegradable powder. it breaks down with salt. Freezer packs are literally powder and water. I put them down the drain all the time - so does anybody who does Blue Apron or Hello Fresh for more than a week. Also, disposable diapers contain 4-6 grams of sodium polyacrilate per diaper - a 1kg freezer pack contains a gram. So... each blue Apron box is half a diaper's worth of sodium polyacrilate which yes, you shouldn't breathe but really, Mother Jones, this is why I no longer have a subscription.
