Gamification is a creative solution to many problems, but it often isn't being implemented by creative people. They usually just copy what happens to be working at the moment. When you see a good idea in the world that doesn't seem to be working the way it should, it usually comes down to this. It's not enough to say, "Gamification works, let's dangle a carrot in front of them and see what happens". You have to understand your audience, the factors that motivate them and their desired outcome, not just yours. I would imagine that it takes a good amount of training in human psychology to understand how to properly implement gamification in a way that provides the desired results.

But you're right about it being a "buzz word", and a sort of flavor of the month. I've started to see it creep in to my professional life via online training modules and I'd be glad to see it creep out again. -I'm not 10 years old, I don't need a "gold star". -Money however, is always accepted.
