The primary step to taking back control over 'magical' technology is to use free software. With free software, you are the one in control of your software. You are not controlled by the software, as with proprietary software. With free software, you are also legally empowered to dig into the inner workings of your devices, and understand how they work. Your life is no longer being controlled by opaque algorithms and foreign companies, but clearly-written configuration files that you can read/write yourself.
