I think it says a lot about somebody, especially someone who has done significant work, when they don't try to justify or popularize the things they have done. In my mind it says something about the quality of their work, and the fact that they didn't need to advertise it for it to be accepted. The fact that he didn't talk much about the idea he came up is probably the reason the he only became a colonel too.
