I recall in an interview on TED, Elon musk said he made a bet with a friend that solar power would be the primary source of power in United States within 20 years. That was several years ago so he has about 17 years left. Hopefully, it's a bet he wins.
Yes, that is who I am primarily referring when I say experts predict solar will reach grid parity by 2030. Peter Diamandis also suggests that this will occur. Based off of what is happening with solar cell technology at the moment, it may happen in the mid-2020s, but I suppose 2030 is the safe assertion because of diffusion time. Either way, there should be a year or two that become critical to switching the balance of power from fossil fuels to solar globally.
In that same interview, Musk was asked about why electric is the way to go for automobiles. His answer made sense, he said that electricity is a problem that needs to be solved regardless so fueling cars with electricity, even though they tangentially require fossil fuel, makes sense. -valid point. Also, nice piece I hadn't realized you were the author.
