I used to be involved with a sheep study. It was longitudinal; we were studying the effects of an implanted atrial defibrillator over a seven-year period. Each sheep cost us a quarter million dollars a year to keep fed and healthy. We had two dozen of them.

Were you feeding them caviar and Dom Perignon?!

I hope they got some good data.

Nude mice and rats which have compromised immune systems are the most costly ones I've worked with. They need a special room, and I think they run a several dollars a day per animal.

Naaah, they just had a full-time staff of eight and a secure, non-disclosed location. I'll say this - they didn't look like they had a hard life, despite the fact that we'd sporadically throw them into afib just to monitor them.
