It can be much longer than three years. My observation suggests that the longest time is spent figuring out if you want to transition and researching what it involves. Then there is time spent learning girl things, if you 're a boy, and boy things if you're a girl. Then there's more time spent living in the new gender privately, then publicly and that involves various stages. Someone who has had the experience him or herself can confirm or deny that. The hormones tend to work pretty quickly though. They usually recommend that you start living in the other gender before hormones and surgery.
