I recall hearing the other day that the average age for a researcher to get a major grant is 44yo. That is when you are considered to be fully employed, or tenure-worthy. 28 years of school, and a decent living starting at age 44.
Research funding in the US has been awful for a long time. We can't just fund a STEM education, we need to fund the research too. A PhD is an education in independent research.
