Cruelty is a close cousin to injustice, yet it is different. Injustice and its opposite, justice, are political criteria par excellence. Cruelty and its opposites, kindness, compassion and decency, are more personal. An unjust society must reform its laws and institutions. A cruel society must reform itself.

Eckhart Tolle often speaks about the "pain body" and how it is either "active" or "dormant" within us. I think he is on to something and that many in our country suffer from an over active pain body.
