Collapsing comments is definitely something I am thinking on. I'm a bit reticent ot have auto-collapsing comments, but I can see the advantage of enabling a user to hide a part of a thread.

In my opinion if you do end up auto-hiding comments I would base it on hiding comments or subthreads that, after some period of time, don't have any points. So like, if I look at a post that's a week old the site auto-hides any comments that haven't gained any attention yet. Just an errant thought :)
