All this talk of what's wrong with art, but not really any clear explanation of what the author would rather, besides "less sell-outs." Would he be happier if people played with vibrant colors more? Painted detailed landscapes? Creativity comes not being afraid to experiment with the awful until you find something that sticks, no? I have my fair share of "modern art" that I hate, but this just seems like an unproductive piece...
Supply and demand Because stupid rich people like to value themselves with things they buy and ART is so much more clever than the normal shit. If they buy expensive art then it makes them sophisticated and smart and better than everyone else. You can by taste after all. Best quote i've read in a long time"Freud said the goals of the artist are fame, money, and beautiful lovers."
That's reductive, though. When did rich people become stupid? When did art become clever? You'll note that there's still ridiculous demand for the Old Masters - it's not like the only art they're buying is crap. The issue is the only art being produced is crap - which is a wholly different problem. Here's a better quote: Art is the knack of making something from nothing and selling it. Frank Zappa
It will swing back. It must. I'm not acquainted with the world that adores Hirst. However, they seem to have a solid foundation for their community, and plenty of outlets to support their messaging. I'm sure that the internet and virality plays a role in this transformation of the art world. These days communities can't be quiet and grow and evolve without the constant threat of catching on. 'Catching on' is always in the back of everyone's mind.
