I created a new playlist on Spotify this week: Badass Women, not taking your shit I was realizing that bands like Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and other seriously lo-fi bands were doing Important Shit and Saying Important Shit, and not getting wound up in the technical mastery thing... just playing their goddamn hearts out the best they could, and saying shit that is important and empowering for women. That gave me the idea for the name of the playlist ... and then the idea grew. I realized there are badass women being powerful in all kinds of music, so I expanded my list and started digging into artists I haven't listened to in a long time. Joan Jett. Dolly Parton. L7. Lizzo. 4 Non Blondes. Pretenders. No Doubt. Queen Latifah. Romeo Void. Missy Elliott. Lady Leshurr. Plasmatics. Heart. Alanis. Edie Brickell. And I can't want to remember other fantastic powerful women, and their songs of empowerment, to add to the list!!
Those bands are all so fucking good. Every single artist you've listed here. One of the greatest joys I've had at a concert was seeing The Julie Ruin back in 2015 - it was a wet and wild day in Capitol Hill and she played through an electrical fire that was happening off to the side of the stage. Best set of the day, hands down.
Mom, can we have "Bella Ciao"? We have "Bella Ciao" at home "Bella Ciao" at home: The Swedish submission for Eurovision has been decided, I don't have any strong opinions about it, but I guess it's fine. There's some cosmic justice that Cornelia Jakobs ended up winning over Anders Bagge, who was in the jury that passed on her when she auditioned for the Swedish version of American Idol.
