I am baffled as to how people can get so upset about churches, family gatherings or motorcycle rallies, but then turn a blind eye to the protests, Walmart shoppers, or Biden revelers.

If the standard for tight lockdowns is "people I don't like and places I don't shop" then it isn't about COVID (it seems to me)

It's a timeframe thing. A church service has the potential for more spread than going to walmart because people spend longer in church than they do in Walmart. There's ample evidence that singing is a bigger spreader than talking. Can church services be held safely? Certainly. Where I am - Washington State - services are fine if they're at 25% capacity and social distancing is observed. However, the culture war take is that church services cannot be limited because it's church. It's not a pragmatic or empathetic approach.

Sturgis? That's a notoriously rowdy party with a fair amount of shenanigans. Family gatherings? That has a lot more to do with the fact that cases are rising, emergency rooms are full and it's going to be the mixing of a bunch of people who aren't already mixed.

You're absolutely right: there's way too many culture warriors on both sides. But the left has the advantage of excess caution while the right has the disadvantage of proven epidemiological disadvantage.

The list of necessary activities that occur inside of a church is exactly 0.

Grocery stores must remain open so that people can feed themselves.

The difference is that if I ask the average progressive protester to wear a mask and social distance themselves, they will do their best to do so.

Christians will tell you to go fuck yourself, no communist is going to get them to wear a mask and stay home from church.

Learn how to parse mistakes from malice. Church attendance in the time of pandemic disease is malice.

100% agree.

Maybe some of them... but I’ve not met many like that. The folks in my immediate sphere are happy to take all the measures, (masks, no singing, no socializing, multiple services of smaller groups) if it means they can worship. I’m sure there are some examples of bad behavior, but your demonization of an entire swath of people is not entirely accurate.

The supreme court sides with those who spread plague.

That some of you have an education equal to a grade schooler does not change your political representation and goals.

Well you simply do not understand how the virus spreads: long-term indoor exposure to an infected individual. Hang out for an hour indoors with an infected person, and even if you wear a mask, you are likely to get it.

It's just simple mathematical probability: Someone is spewing COVID. The longer you are in close proximity to them, the better your chance to catch it.

Chuch? Long term, close quarters, singing, handling the same things and passing them between people, close face-to-face contact/discussions with other parishioners. It's the PERFECT location for COVID to spread.

The Sturgis motorcycle rally? You realize this is an ENTIRE TOWN that turns everything - even houses - into bars, where people go in, get absolutely slaughtered drunk, and do stupid shit, right? Fuck... I'm a life-long motorcyclist and I wouldn't get near Sturgis ANY time of year, much less during the annual rally.

WalMart? Which individual are you in consistent close proximity with at WalMart? People pass each other quickly. They are moving. The air is moving and it is heavily ventilated. It ain't ideal, but it misses several of the key elements needed for easy transmission. Lessen your time shopping, wear a mask, and don't spend a long time in close proximity to strangers. (Generally a good plan at ANY WalMart, honestly.)

BLM/Biden/Protests? None of the protests have been superspreader events like Trump rallies have been or Sturgis was. Look at the masks. Look at the space between protestors. Look at the health tactics for the supporters providing food, water, and medical to the protestors. All best practices in place. Not ideal, but ... there's a time to protest, and there's a way to do it as safely as possible.

Fuck man... I know you are new to Hubski, but you can't come here with some poorly thought out Reddit bullshit and expect us to just swallow your turds whole. Science and well-reasoned debates are what Hubski is about. Step up your game, and leave the weak-ass shit like this for Reddit or Parler.

I think they are often not the same people. I personally know folks that didn't go to BLM protests solely because of Covid concerns.

Also outside gatherings with distancing are significantly safer than many people in enclosed space. I haven't seen anyone speak out against riding motorcycles in a group, that's ridiculous.

But I've also seen lots of hypocrisy in the raver scene this summer, where unmasked people would gather to dance to psytrance. But then again, hippies are also notoriously anti mainstream science, and often believe crystals and good vibes are good enough protection.

Still, the net appearance is: left wing and box-store activities get a pass, but conservative and small biz things don't.

- Walmart is an indoor & crowded activity.

- There was some motorcycle rally a few months ago that raised a kerfuffle. It was outdoors, but not moving.

Same here in Quebec - you also need to go through the store following arrows, always distancing. It’s super annoying sometime to be stuck behind someone taking their sweet as time, but it’s reasonable to all stay safer.

Are... are you talking about Sturgis? Like it’s some little outdoor picnic? As a major tourist event it’s a hell of a lot more than that and closing the American border before it happened is likely what kept provinces like Manitoba from having much of a first wave.

Large stores are... large. Small businesses suffered, because they don’t have the space to operate. A cafe in my town used part of the sidewalk/parking lot to take orders. And seriously, let’s not pretend conservatives haven’t been having their own protests without any issue from the cops. Half the time it seems like they’re on their side. If you’re upset about the idea of church’s not holding service, then say that. Don’t try to call Sturgis “some rally” in hopes none of us would know what it was. Some of us listened to people getting very angry at the idea it was just some rally they could miss.
