This week I was introduced to Brown Sabbath which answers the question "What would Black Sabbath sound like with a horn section?" - there are 2 volumes and an EP Brownout are a 9 piece band and these are clearly a labour of love both for Black Sabbath and James Bond movie music with a horn section - yeah, definitely suggest a better description because I obviously suck at that. Here's a couple of tracks live on KEXP:
HUGE fan of Brownout! And I love that they add their own spice to the Sabbath songs. Anyone can play Sabbath note-for-note... I prefer it when someone brings something new to the party, like Brownout does. (They are also often included in my Spotify playlists that have Speedometer and the Monophonics and Vulfpeck... because they funky, too!)
Absolutely. What really struck me was how damn well those horns and rhythms were integrated into the alien terrain of proto-doom/metal. Just brilliantly done.
Here's a different one from me this week... Mary Spender is a guitarist and YouTuber who I like very much. She's a great player, speaks well, does fun interviews, and doesn't take herself too seriously. Turns out she is - surprisingly - a big fan of Mastodon, which is WAY outside of her normal style of playing. In this video she breaks down how she learns a new song, by learning to play one of her favorite Mastodon songs! Which is amazing to see this quiet, calm, chill English woman, as she works through some bangin' metal. It's a fun thing to watch... and finally got me to listen to some Mastodon!
Juicy, but who eats Shrimp Rim? This also led me to Phat Shrimp EP. I didn't know Susumu Yokota had this side project... I used to listen to Acid Mt. Fuji a lot so I'm going to listen to that later; really takes me back.
The sound track is too familiar to GIANTS from last year, imo. Every feature of animated Faker warms my heart, though. I am! My attention has drifted more and more away from worlds since 2017. This year, it's both convenient to wake up to, and brings a feeling of pre-COVID familiarity. When did you get watching (betting it's a mid-day watch for you)? Do you have a team/region you're cheering for? OftenBen played for a long while - do you watch Worlds nowadays, OB?
It is actually a morning/noon watch for me. I am usually for europe + the underdog. The game coming up now will be interesting as I didn't expect a Turkish team to do so well :) Will be watching the main even with my sisters that are spread across the globe. It nearly became a tradition :)
Ah! Great timing for you this year, too. The EU/NA Semi-finals (C9 vs FNC) was heartbreaking to watch as a western fan in 2018 - also the Korean time-zone is the worst to watch live from this side of the world. Must have been exciting seeing G2 and FNC go so far the past couple years. Best of luck to your teams! Also, RIP Supermassive. They've gone through Play-Ins before - we'll see them again for sure. That is a lovely tradition with family. :D jealloouuusss
Probably my favorite band in the german speaking world. Plus, their concerts are super fun!
