Sometimes I wonder how our world would look like if copyright was never a thing.

For example. Inventions. It does not make any sense for me that someone that "invents" something should own the right to that thing. Isn't the invention something that is inevitable due to how knowledge and spreads from person to person over time? An invention is only a snapshot of that process that is then attributed to a single person/entity. What about all the people, the institutions, and the circumstances that lead to that knowledge being channeled through that person for the "invention" to happen?

Other bullshit with copyright in music. How can bands like Metallica or Rolling Stones sue people for using chord progressions they have used in their songs. Did they invent chord progressions?? That is insane. Music is, like science, also an evolutionary process. Every musician is influenced by people before them and that is found in their music.

I feel like this can be applied to everything, even novels or art.

I wonder if there would have been a better way to compensate writers, musicians, artists etc. for their works than patents and copyright
