Selling of user data should be illegal. Cross-site tracking should be illegal. These platforms have become weapons of mass influence. Kill the economic model.

Should buying user data be illegal?

Is Twitter imposing a cost on society when they support disinformation and propaganda so they can extract value from society in the form of engagement?

Yes.

I've procured some links you'll hate. :D

It took Scientific American too many words to say: Yup, stupid people are more susceptible to fake news.

And my god, do we have a lot of stupid people. That poll cannot be right. If it's correct, America might only barely achieve herd immunity after a working vaccine is developed, due to tens of millions refusing to vaccinate.

Maybe I'll go tornado chasing today.

Yeah, people are people. Call me crazy, but I don't feel like the answer to one of our collective vulnerabilities is to exploit it to the max :)

Maybe we should even take extra care that that not happen...

What, through regulation?!? Now you’re censoring my free speech and right to consume blatantly false information, which increasingly overlap with my misplaced sense of American exceptionalism!

Perhaps. Much of the world doesn’t allow for the purchase of most tissues and organs to prevent exploitation. The purchase of data could be exploitative, or done as a work-around. For example, an ISP could simply give a discount to customers that give their data.
