One of my pet ideas on why so many kids are depressed is that there are no grand challenges and hardships to plough through anymore.

Hard to say. Life itself seems like such a grand challenge and hardship. The depression comes when the "kids" realize that having an education doesn't necessarily get you what you want and having a relationship doesn't alleviate the problem of also having to have a life.
