That's not as egregious as when writers refer to Daft Punk as the god fathers electronic music or worse yet techno. I'll bet you can find an essay that traces the origins of Industrial to Musique Concrete. I feel a lot more comfortable aiming short of mark than past it. And anyone who knows anything knows that that one guy named industrial music in reference to the Industrial label who had luminaries like Thomas Leer and Robert Rental, Cabaret Voltaire, Gristle and other deviants Maybe I made that up but I'd be talking a lot less shit than if I were to say something about Ministry. I like the early take. Jeffrey Lewis's History of Punk Rock on the Lower East Side goes all the way back to the 50's. I like that it's a complete history that is slightly different each time I've heard him perform it. I listen to more than a few records from the 50's that scream PUNK ROCK at me. And a salute It was the album that changed everything—establishing the trajectory for the band Ministry as well as the sound that would be dubbed industrial music
It is a rare music journalist that doesn't bug the shit out of me. I think it's because exploring the minutiae of everything you love about music is a fundamental aspect of fandom and music journalists are basically superfans who use their bully pulpit to denigrate the knowledge of other fans. Back in the good old days of rec.music.industrial it was an acknowledged, foregone conclusion that TG and the rest were industrial music, they weren't the "origins" of industrial music, which yes, absolutely went back to Musique Concrete. Usually someone would throw Mossilov out there and someone else would point out that just because there's banging in it doesn't mean it's industrial because fuckin' hell the War of 1812 has cannons in it which is pretty damn industrial and about this time someone will piss in the Cheerios by bringing up the Beatles Which was certain to devolve fuckin' everything because on the one hand, "beatles." On the other hand, it was in The Craft and you aren't allowed to say anything bad about The Craft unless you're one of those people but on the other hand it's an extraordinarily pussilanimous cover by Our Lady Peace which is about as Mall Goth as you can go, you tedious little tweaker go listen to Marilyn Manson or something. Welcome back.
LOL I love that cover. And it's really obnoxious. And the quickest way to find it on the Internet is to type "Charmed theme song." Because Rose McGowan so goths say yaaaaaaaay but also Shannon Doherty and Alyssa Milano so goths mumble into their cloves confused Fundamentally, The Craft is like the nexus of the Fuck/Marry/Kill goth universe.
I was listening to Orb's Live 93 a while back and realizing that me, listening to Live 93 in 2014, was kind of like me listening to Pink Floyd's Meddle when Live 93 came out. I saw Killing Joke about a month back. Jaz is still Jaz but he looks like a crazy old man with hair dye. Geordie Walker looks like Fun Grandpa.
