Happy 4th of July to our American contingent. I'm celebrating by going to Canada for the remainder of the week... This post hit home for me, and I seem to share a handful of sentiments with zebra2. But then I updated my finances yesterday, and saw that while I think I'm spending too much, and will be cutting down the groceries/going out bills, I still put away a grand in savings last month. And have at least a year worth of money to get by on should I be laid off tomorrow, upped my 401k contribution, and am trying to parse out what out what if any other investments are worth pursuing. It doesn't feel like I'm in a better place financially than most of America, but then I read all the statistics kleinbl00 et. AL post and, damn, apparently I'm doing better than most of the country. It's something to be thankful for, and something to strive to maintain if not grow. Also have a bit of a product idea which I'm hoping to look more into after this round of backpacking.
Some drawings of chickens. Quarter for scale. I drew these a few weeks ago, all three referencing images off of Wikimedia. I didn’t save them though and that site has so many images of chickens, I doubt I could rediscover the reference images if I tried. Sorry about that. Needless to say though, the real ones were very beautiful and they were a treat to look at. No personal developments, but that's because life is good right now. Happy Fourth everyone.
Indeed. Most of the drawings I share on here are either on 5.5" x 4.25" cardstock or 8.5" x 5.5" cardstock. Any larger, and coloring them in would take forever. These here, I was intentionally drawing small. I was trying to make with pencil, the type of lines a person makes on metal using hammer and chisel (like what you find on gun and coin engravings, for example). So the thicker dark lines represent deeper and wider grooves while the thinner light lines represent shallower and narrower grooves. If you click the picture and look at it in a 1:1 pixel ratio, you can really see how the darker lines are really dug into the paper. It was an experiment, and a fun one at that. I intend to do more down the road, see how small and detailed I can get.
24x30, somewhere in that area, is the general standard in art school. It's weird drawing that large if you're used to something more like 8.5x11 or even 16x20. You get used to it and drawing small becomes tedious. Especially when you can easily scan and resize things nowadays. But again, there aren't any rules so I'm not trying to say you're doing anything wrong
Happy Fourth y'all! Good vibes all around. I finally got to see Iron & Wine live. I can't even remember where I first heard about Iron & Wine, but it's been in my playlists for years now. The band was phenomenal, and I got to hear all the songs I hoped for. Damn near each song was performed in a much more interesting and dynamic way than the album would suggest. And I brought a new friend along - my D&D DM is a nice fella and I knew he likes indie music, so I invited him along. (And partly because it is surprisingly difficult to make new real friends after college.) Thankfully he also thought it was a great concert. I also had this amazing company party at what was one of Amsterdam's biggest prisons up until two years ago. Brutalism, BBQ, barbed wire and beers in the sun. The afterparty was on the 7th floor of a hotel with an amazing view of the city. Colleague of mine mentioned that he wanted me to help along with a project he might be doing with Sidewalk Labs, which is dope. Yesterday the girl I'm seeing had a great evening together at a restaurant with a plethora of dishes from all around the world. We hadn't seen each other in a while because we both had so much planned already and she lives in another city. Part of me was worried that that might be a problem, but it wasn't at all and we already have plans to see each other soon. (Or at least soonish.)
Soccer World Cup I only follow soccer for the big events (European Championship, World Cup), and I'm really enjoying it this year. Nothing beats watching this kind of game in the street with your friends and strangers -- all really enjoying the moment. Mbappe top speed is 23 mph in that first run, it's insane. Hope France will go far. Career I'm going to enroll in this program https://eu.udacity.com/course/blockchain-developer-nanodegree--nd1309? and see where it takes me. I'm currently working in consulting for my end-of-studies internship and I fundamentally believe that blockchain applications is only going to accelerate moving forward. Having a business background and some technical know-how should let me have a foot in the industry. I've been following the space closely for a year. Focus and Priorities I want to run regularly again, I want to take time to read, I want to pass my motorbike licence, I want to travel, I want to date... It's hard to focus and decide on your priorities. --- Happy 4th of July to you all !
Since my country failed to qualify for the World Cup, I'm rooting for our dear neighbours Sweden. Watching them beat Switzerland in an exciting match was a thrill. I don't have much hope for them beating England on Saturday, to be honest, but it should be a fun game in any case. :-)
Happy 4th of July, I celebrated by submitting my transfer application to a German university :) The softball team here has lost many games in a row, but we're having a shitton of fun. I'm also writing a play-- stay tuned for more on that. (Very loose adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, removing all characters except R&J&Tybalt, and basically getting rid of the family feud altogether.) Otherwise everything's smooth as butter. Got grades back for my half-semester course, and not too stressed about finals approaching for the rest. Gradually getting more and more used to the prospect of staying here for the next 5 years or so. Feels good.
Happy 4th 'mericans. I think I'm gonna post the #scificlub thread tomorrow, as today might be slow due to the holiday, but I think we're gonna do bhrgunatha's pick: 𝑰𝒍𝒍 𝑭𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑫𝒐𝒘𝒏. Born of Man and Woman had slightly more support technically, but I think a film would be an alright change of pace. Plus I picked kleinbl00's suggestion last time. Making the hard calls. The suggestion thread had solid picks all the way through, though.
Good time for a change. I'm back east, the students are here, it's too fucking hot out. The someday Misses and I explored VT this weekend - think we may settle in Burlington someday soon. I'm making music again, making shirts again - both pictured above. I made a 4th of july shirt, will upload later. [EDIT: Behold the monstrosity] Things are good, hectic. I'm scoring a movie this summer, and working on some music besides. EDIT: for those interested, the music tools featured in the above are a beat up, taped down Casio sampling a beer bottle; an acoustic guitar with an eBow drone; a gameboy color through a delay.
My leg hurts and I'm grumpy. ButterflyEffect kleinbl00 what was the conversation you had a few weeks ago? I have some soreness that's taking a while to go away either in my glute or outer hamstring. I remember something about "I have no ass," and I might have weak glutes myself that are causing this. I think this is the same thing that gave me problems at the tail end of my marathon last year. I'm going to give it a few days off and then add miles back slowly. Maybe I'll hike Saturday instead of my long run and then try a short run Sunday. I'm trying to do some strength and flexibility training at home, too.
That's it! I'm not sure that I have any significant torsion, but it does seem my natural running gait is flawed. I've been trying to focus on flexing my glutes when I walk. It's like you said in your reply: it's like learning to walk all over again. It also feels more efficient.
It also gives you a great butt. Chicks digg the runner butt.
Are you doing butt exercises? Have you found them to help? I have the last couple days, and I have more soreness than I thought was possible for my legs. I'm optimistic this will help, and while I'm silently freaking out about a half in six weeks and full in 13.5, it is what it is, and I'll do the best I can.
Yep! Lower body day at the gym always includes Glute work. A few times a week at home I do Theraband exercises targeting my glutes, hips, and ankles. All the weak spots. They've been instrumental to recovering from any injury I've encountered and generally running stronger.
Georgia is now hands-free. Meaning you basically can't touch your phone at all while you're driving. There are exceptions. I can't remember them off the top of my head. You can wear a headset to talk. You can't wear a headset to listen to music. You can't access your phone at a red light. You can while lawfully parked. Someone was quoted as saying they want to make distracted driving as bad as drunk driving in the minds of residents. Added revenue, not just directly from the law, but now having a legal pretense to pull over about anyone and potentially find drugs or something is a wholly unintended benefit I'm sure. The law is unenforceable at best as it's written. In practice, it'll be up to the discretion of individual officers to decide when you're in violation. I drive my car for money at the moment and I'm more upset by this stupid law than I would otherwise be. I can multi task pretty well and can go into auto pilot during some menial tasks like driving. Not saying I should be able to type and post this to hubski while I'm driving, but the act of hold a phone to your ear isn't the distracting part, engaging in conversation is. And some people can't walk and chew gum so any time they're talking on the phone while driving it has the potential to dominate their cognition. I'm expecting to be pulled over at some point in the future for no good reason.
There's the rub for the poor. I guess I could get $250 together but I have higher financial priorities at the moment. I have a shittier, Chevy specific version of CarPlay now. Commentators have pointed out that this law will disproportionately affect the poor. Obviously no one really cares because fuck the poor.
How much is the ticket? $150 and a point. How much does the point cost on insurance? At your age, prolly $20-$30 a month, and that for two years. The $250 Jensen ends up being $150-$300 cheaper than a single ticket - and c'mon, dude, you got enough together for a Chevy new enough that it'll talk to your phone. I get your point about being poor. But there's also thinking poor. "Thinking poor" is responding to helpful advice by arguing you're too poor to do anything but suffer while driving around in a car new enough to have a USB port.
It's not all that helpful when https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MyLink It's a $50 fine. I need to take the GRE which is $100-200. Ya know. So I can stop "thinking poor." My poor person thinking currently involves slowly saving the money required, planning to drive all day to get the fee reduction paperwork, planning when I can take the actual test. Etc. Etc. And that's just one financial event I'm planning to deal with.I have a shittier, Chevy specific version of CarPlay now.
