Today I took a long-ass walk in the nearby park trails. I saw a lil snake and accidentally scared the bejeezus out of an adorable baby rabbit. The best bit, though, was being in the heavily wooded part of the trails near the tail end of sundown. The fireflies were out like I've never seen before. It was like a fireworks display or a rave or a visual symphony in the dim twilight. I got an unusual sense of satisfaction from knowing that they weren't performing anything planned or rehearsed--having glowing butts is just what they do. I was lucky enough to get close to one chilling on a leaf, doing the slow-glow cycle. I could almost see the rest of its body from the light of its luminous abdomen. The whole thing was beautiful in a way that's hard to describe. I felt like a little kid, just watching in awe. It made me feel glad to be alive.

If only I could be so grossly incandescent...
