I went through 2017 almost entirely without goals and as a result, we got a birth center opened, I found a potential new career and Ethereum went from $7 to $700. The one thing I thought I'd do - write a few screenplays, the simplest goddamn thing in the world - ended up with eight marginal pages.

I'ma reiterate last year's rant but with less anger. I'm coming to the conclusion that if you're fundamentally ok with the direction your life is taking, insisting that you need a change is just inviting the universe to smite you.

My therapist seems to think that as long as you are moving forward then it doesn't really matter if you did all your homework or not. He seems pretty smart so I'm sticking with his big picture "focus on the positive" idea.

There's this thing called the Four Tendencies. It's no life-changer, but it did point me to a vague direction — which is better than no direction at all.

Apparently, I'm at least partly a Rebel. I go against expectations (read: goals), my own or others', even against my will, 'cause I can't stand being bound by something.

Call it whatever you want, but it does sound like you're gonna do well without any goals. There are people who enjoy getting shit done off the list. Then there's someone like you and me.

Hey so, just wondering...since you determined your habits/motivations were driven by that "rebel" behavior type, have you found your behavior seems to conform to that expectation formed by the quiz you took?

I think what I'm struggling with is understanding how being a rebel, and defying both your own and others' expectations for yourself, could be more positive as a personality trait than detrimental. I confess, I took the quiz and it says I'm an upholder; personally, I've always been very self-directed and driven, so the results jive - I'll hold off on snark about personality tests for the time being. I mention my natural tendency because it seems pretty directly oppositional to the "Rebel" type, and could be a large part of why I struggle to understand how a person could be a rebel type and also really achieve what he/she wants out of life.

So then I have to ask - if 'rebel' is really as hobbling a tendency as it seems to me - why would anyone get that result and say, "Oh, okay, that's me. Reactionary and distractable. I sure do want to stay that way," instead of trying to learn how to manage themselves and achieve their desires more effectively, not to mention proactively, than someone whose life is controlled by the desires of all others?

I mean, logically...wouldn't a rebel deny and act against the proscriptive results of a personality quiz? But then they'd be a conformist. Maybe you can't rebel against one thing without accidentally conforming to something else. I mean. Just saying. I'd think a true rebel would maybe have to be more erratic in behavior than anything else

Those are good questions. I hope you find your answers, because I'm not going to give them to you.

If the direction is useful, you can take it back to its progenitor, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, itself a pop-culture interpretation of Carl Jung.

...I started to wonder if Jung had 64 combinations of personality types.

A business plan is nothing but a series of goals nailed together with the tangible steps you've determined will get you from "nothing and nowhere" to a sustainable, profitable operation. :P
