Whether the stories are made up or not, they sum up stupid things that people did to themselves. Very unlike the approximately $10,000 or more, including lost growth potential, that my wife and I, as newlyweds, gave to some jackass "financial advisor" for a piece of garbage variable universal life insurance. The douchebag did an excellent job of marketing an investment product to us that lined his pockets with huge management fees and out of the ordinary insurance premiums. It was a few years later with more experience that we sent that dude packing.
