People have been quite busy recently (me included) so let's watch and discuss hard sci-fi masterpiece Kung Fury as listed above.
Aside from any commentary on that, I'd also like to hear what material people would like to cover for the next sci-fi club.
I remember seeing this when it came out, and thinking that it sucked. It's basically one mediocre joke for 25 minutes. I don't know if it's because I'm old enough to remember the movies that it's based on? I dunno. But humor without surprise isn't funny, and this was just too predictable.
The reason I like it, I think, is because it satirizes the entire 80's cheesy action movie genre in a low-budget style that basically makes it so bad that it's good. It's definitely a YMMV though, and pretty polarizing. Out of 5 people I've shown it to, 2 loved it and 3 absolutely hated it. Being drunk the first time I saw it may also have helped.
I have the sneaking suspicion that Kung Fury was the output of a prototype AI or neural network in training, that was fed basically every "cool" thing that existed during my high school years. Video tape. Kung Fu. Dinosaurs. Lasers. Pleather. Keyboards. The idea that a "gritty" landscape is LA at night in the rain. And 5th generation copies of badly overdubbed foreign videos. If it was 10 minutes shorter it would be better. If it was 2 minutes longer, it would be untenable. I... I'm... conflicted.
