- The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported Friday that the nation's cattle inventory was the smallest since the agency began a July count in 1973. It estimates the size of the nation's herd each January and July. The U.S. had 97.8 million head as of July 1, 2 percent less than a year ago.

Its dry but its not normal. How was Superior? I spent the weekend enjoying a beach on Lake Huron, and it was really strange. The water was feet lower than normal, and bathtub warm close to shore. People had their beach chairs set up on some sandbars that are usually submerged. The one good thing that might come out of this drought is that meat prices are supposed to increase dramatically next year and 2014, since the herd will be so small. Maybe that will get people to eat less meat, which is good for our health and the environment.

I can't imagine a warm Lake Superior. That lake holds so much lore and mystique, non of which are warm (to me) but rather icy, majestic and haunting. I've just become very homesick for MI.
I'll be in Charlevoix/Traverse City area before too long. I can't wait to take my daughter to Lake Michigan.

I recently attempted the "full submersion" at the pool and it didn't go over to well with her. They sure do have a way of reintroducing you to things, don't they? I've not looked forward to time at the lake like this since I was a kid. Playing is fun!
