Been listening to "Predicts The Future" a lot lately, an album by Plumtree. The lyrics are very clearly written by teenaged girls but I think that the instrumentals more than make up for it. And the solo at the end of this song is fantastic:
Now that I'm slightly less mopey than I have been the last couple of weeks, I've been getting back into the who New Retro Wave thing. It's a genre that's inspired by how "futuristic" music was portrayed in the '80s, only with modern production values. Nightcall from the Drive soundtrack is probably the most famous example.
198X by MegaDrive was probably my favorite album of this type, but I'm thinking it may have been ousted by The Shape by Dance With the Dead:
