I think next presidential election season, I'm gonna throw my hat into the ring. I'll be running on a platform of friendship and rainbows. Now I'm not gonna lie to you guys, I know I can't do it alone so I'm gonna need Hubskiers to help fill various cabinet positions. If you're hesitant to join or vote for me, just take comfort in knowing that I can't be any worse than Trump.

Can I be your Minister of Technology? I'd be nice to have someone in the spot with some experience and understanding of how tech actually works.

One of my duties would be to sit in the back of the House or Senate, with an airhorn, while they are in session. Anytime someone says something blatantly technologically moronic - oh, like, for example, that they are going to "eliminate porn on the internet" - I'd blow the airhorn to let everyone in the room know that the right honorable speaker is lying and incompetent.

This is a service I will be proud to provide.

I will be the Minister of Airhorn. Every time you blow yours, I blow mine seventeen times. How does $400k per annum sound?

That's all we need. The aye's have it. Motion passed.

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Absolutely. Though I hope you don't mind my saying that we might need to break up the position into multiple roles. These days, technology is a huge umbrella term and it affects every area of our lives, from national security to the economy to human rights. I think that in order to properly address the variety of ways it affects all of us, we might need more than one person to look after the issue.

goobster  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Absolutely. Cyber security, power, telecommunications, international relations, and the Office of Technology Commercialization (previously a NASA department) will all be separate organizations reporting to the MoT.

There will also be an internal government outreach organization that will aggressively move to modernize government systems and bring them up to snuff with current platforms and trends.

Oh. And data visualization with Tableau will be a required course in Junior High School! Need to make sure the next generation is exquisitely data literate.

War  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Office of Technology Commercialization, that is the office that helps take government/university technology usually reserved for organizations like NASA, DARPA, etc. and finding commercial uses for them in the general marketplace right?

goobster  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Yep. I used to help them out when I was at NASA. It was called a variety of names, but basically the department was responsible for taking all the taxpayer-funded science that NASA had come up with, and finding companies who could turn that science into commercial products.

In practice it didn't work so well. It should have been eBay for NASA ideas... but at that point in time, eBay hadn't been invented yet. So technology kinda got funneled out to a few companies that had personal connections within the team, and then many of those companies failed to execute on creating legitimate commercial products from the NASA tech. A lot of those ideas floundered due to lack of accountability and follow through.

But nowadays, I'd love to see a modern version of this. A place where NASA scientists could publish their work and findings, and then companies could pitch product ideas, and NASA could trumpet how taxpayer money went to create jobs and new products for the market... that'd be so cool!

I have no idea how that department is doing today, or if it even still exists.

Oh wait! Google!

Lookee here... the department still exists, and now has a much better name and portal!

ThatFanficGuy  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Don't NASA commercialize their tech on their own?

War  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Like goobster said it used to be a department under NASA

ThatFanficGuy  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Oh, that makes sense. I skipped his words.

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

. . . I don't know half the words you just said. That tells me you're perfect for the job!

kleinbl00  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

arguewithatree  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

done. you got my vote.

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Wonderful. I'll save a spot in my cabinet for you, if you want it.

arguewithatree  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

yeah man dibs on sec of state

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Which state did you want? There's like, 45 of them or something.

I kid. I kid. You can have all 50 if no one else wants any. ;)

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

What is your stance on kittens?

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I'm pro-environment and would do what I can to increase federal funding for America's parks at every level, from federal to state to municipal. I'd work hard to encourage businesses to work with the EPA to reduce pollution while still being able to compete on the global market and create jobs for hard working Americans across the country. I will look into the current green energy initiatives we have in place now and see how we can tweak them to make them even more succesful.

You can take comfort in knowing I would make such goals a major priority as I want to do all that and more. You may also voice your concern in the fact that I don't have the slightest clue how to do any of that.

But back to your question. I am very much pro kitten. I am also pro puppy, pro bunny, and pro chicky as well. If it's cute and cuddly, I love it. If it's not, cute and cuddly, I will still love it. Every living thing deserves to have a place on this earth and I will work tirelessly to stick to an ideal that I hold near and dear to my heart.

Thank you for your consideration and thank you for your thoughtful question.

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

You have my vote, sir.

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Wonderful. It's a shame I'm not running this election. I'm catching up to Trump already. :)

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Speaking of, Limberbutt dropped out of the race the other day and endorsed Hillary. I'm not sure what to do with my vote. I guess Deez Nuts is still in the thick of things.

caelum19  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

There's no way he's going to answer this question unfortunately.

arguewithatree  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

i want a kitten in every pot.

_refugee_  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I want every kitten with at least a little pot.

arguewithatree  ·  1869 days ago  ·  link  ·

ayyyy finger guns

ThatFanficGuy  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

You doubt that people will vote for you? And you compare yourself to Trump? What the fuck are you even thinking?!

I expect your candidacy to be announced proudly and loudly. If you like minimalistic art, I may become your logo designer. Can't do much more, but I'm willing to give it whatever I can.

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I love minimalist art as well as classic advertising art. If you think you could invoke a sense of the honest, humble, working class America into your work, that would be amazing.

ThatFanficGuy  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I will give my thought to that.

War  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I'll definitely be a member of your cabinet. You've got my vote, and you've got my service.

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I would in all sincerity be excited to have you in my team. I hope you don't have your sight set on Post Master General though. One of my friends called dibs on that, which I actually find very comforting that he wouldn't want the most glamorous job.

kleinbl00  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I'd be hesitant to vote for any candidate who warmly welcomes "war" into their cabinet...

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I completely understand your reservations. Your opinion, as an American citizen, is both highly respected and valued. As I'm sure you're no doubt aware, War just happens to be an Internet username. I can assure you that the person behind it is a capable, respectable, productive member of our great country. I have the utmost confidence in their ability to serve the American people with pride and a commitment to what is right, fair, and just.

Though your comment was mostly in jest, I would like to take the opportunity to speak on the subject of our nation's great military as I have not had the opportunity to do so until now. As a man raised by very conservative parents, I have been and will continue to be at heart a pacifist. I believe whole heartedly that with a little more effort and with hearts full of compassion and respect for each other, many of our world's problems could be solved without bloodshed.

That said though, I believe that it is our nation's right to have a standing military for the purpose of protecting our interests here at home, as well as the interests of our friends and allies abroad. And what a fine military it is, with ranks full of hard working men and women equipped with some of the best technology known to man. It has been a key driver in our economy through job creation and technological development and I can only hope that it will continue to be so under my leadership.

That said, I am concerned about some of the military spending that is allegedly out of control. It is my goal to take a good hard look at our finances and hopefully with the help of our congressmen and military leaders, we can find a way to trim some financial fat here and there and reinvest the money in our schools and infrastructure. While some people might raise alarm bells, warning of "budget cuts," the American people have my word that I will do everything in my power to ensure that our military will continue to be well equipped, well staffed, and a continual source of pride for this great nation.

"No 'Department of Defense' ever won a war."

-Heinlein

(Sorry for the Starship Troopers obsession. I will forever been enamored of Heinlein.)

War  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I was gonna try to defend myself with a "war of ideas", but that doesn't really help my side of the argument.

Devac  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

You can also claim that you meant something else by that nick anyway entirely. ;)

War  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

In all honesty I always had an eye on Secretary of State, but honestly I doubt I would be prepared for such a huge position plus arguewithatree is probably more fit. I'm more than fine with a behind the scenes position that would involve me with the presidential agenda in terms of policy proposals, policy initiatives, and anything else you may need in regards to attaining your domestic goals during your term.

arguewithatree  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

aw that's nice of you to say. deputy sec is also a presidential appointment i think. so is NSA.

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Ooh, ooh, I want NSA so I can Ron Swanson it.

War  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

You deserve it though! With that position you posted about, and your extensive knowledge on international affairs it only makes sense!

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I actually have what I think is a wonderful idea for international outreach on a diplomatic, cultural, and economic level. You might be perfect for the position.

War  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Sign me up! Any ideas on the VP?

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Hmm. I have some actual considerations. What I need is a person who is willing to look me in the eye at any time and say, "rd95, your heart is in the right place here and I respect that. However, your idea is stupid and it needs a lot of tweaking before we implement it."

_refugee_  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Hi!

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I dunno. Can you handle the triple role of being my VP, the voice of reason, and Poet Laureate?

_refugee_  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

OH SHIT

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

You don't have to give me an answer now. You got about four years to think it over.

_refugee_  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Well, I will say, I am from Delaware, and just look at how well Biden's turned out.

user-inactivated  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

I think we'd make a very interesting President and Vice President, where formality is concerned. You have killer tattoos and an artistic attitude and I think tucking my shirt into my jeans and wearing nice shoes is dressing fancy.

_refugee_  ·  1869 days ago  ·  link  ·

I would dye my hair funky colors because who the hell could tell me not to?

ThatFanficGuy  ·  1869 days ago  ·  link  ·

"In other news, VP now stands for 'Vigorously Pink'"...

War  ·  1870 days ago  ·  link  ·

Definitely its important to remain grounded as hard as that may seem being the POTUS.
